Prosthodontics is one of the several specialty practices recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA). Dentists such as Dr. Jacobson must satisfactorily complete a two to three year post doctoral training program in order to limit their practices to prosthodontics and identify themselves as prosthodontists. Other specialties recognized by the ADA include endodontics, pedodontics, periodontics, orthodontics, radiology and oral surgery. Representation by dentists as specialists in other areas such as implants, cosmetic or esthetic dentistry, temporomandibular joint disease, ceramic restorations, etc. may be descriptive of personal interests but are not validated through formal post graduate training programs approved by the ADA.
